A journey into corporate law: insights from Jonathan Leigh-Hunt, Head of Corporate at Marriott Harrison

We spoke with the Head of Corporate at Marriott Harrison, who shared an illuminating narrative about his personal journey, insights into the legal industry's evolution, and valuable advice for aspiring legal professionals.

Can you describe your initial motivation for pursuing a legal career?

My initial motivation for pursuing a legal career was sown early, nurtured by growing up in a legal family. An equally early passion for promoting the arts initially led me to a career working in PR and Marketing but ultimately the allure of law's diverse opportunities drew me back to a steadfast commitment to pursuing the legal path.

Qualification and building expertise

To requalify as a lawyer in my mid-late twenties, I undertook the PGDL and LPC qualifications on a part-time basis, driven by financial commitments and a decision not to give up working. My work experience gave me a head start in my training contract at Marriott Harrison and dovetailed with the rigours of a training contract. Through my prior experience working in PR and Marketing, I gained invaluable insights into teamwork and office dynamics, which laid a strong foundation for my legal journey.

Do you have any defining experiences in your early years?

Although the initial attraction lay in media legal work, a stint in corporate law during my first seat proved more captivating. The rotation of seats solidified my resolve to specialise in corporate law.

How did you progress from Trainee to Head of Corporate?

The path from trainee to the head of corporate required me to focus on skills development. As I developed as an associate, my willingness to take on responsibilities increased, along with the mastery of legal intricacies and a clear focus on developing client relationships, all paved the way to partnership, culminating in my ambition of becoming an equity partner. Transition to the role of head of corporate was a natural progression, drawing on my broad corporate experience, both transactional and advisory, and a deep understanding of the needs of our clients.

How have you adapted to industry evolution?

Over two decades, the legal landscape has transformed dramatically, fuelled by developments in technology, more sophisticated client expectations and a much sharper focus on client service. The rapid pace, accentuated by technology, necessitated me to take a proactive approach to adaptation. Meeting the demands of a rapidly and continuously evolving environment became, and remains paramount. The importance of staying abreast of technological advancements and client needs, is as important as being attuned to legal and commercial developments.

What key skills are needed for legal team leadership success?

The most critical skills for a role as leader of a legal team is to be a good listener and client service role model. To be available to offer prompt support, guidance and insight to help the team continuously develop their skills of understanding client situations, and the commercial implications and legal nuances that can make a significant difference to client outcomes.

What are your primary responsibilities as Head of Corporate?

My primary responsibilities involve supervising a diverse team ranging from trainees to partners. It also involves the strategic management of the team, vision setting, and day-to-day team oversight. Nurturing a supportive and engaging work environment while ensuring the seamless execution of corporate legal services remains a top priority.

Do you have any advice for aspiring legal professionals?

My advice for aspiring lawyers, would be to gain as much work experience as possible to hone essential transferable skills. The ability to handle client demands, work under pressure, and effectively collaborate within a team are indispensable attributes for a successful legal career.

What do you see as the future of corporate law and how do you plan to evolve?

Anticipating the increasing influence of technology in the legal sphere, I see a shift towards even more pure advisory roles for lawyers, with technology continuing to assume the administrative aspects. To stay relevant, developing strong advisory skills and a comprehensive understanding of the business world will be essential.

Do you have any final guiding principles for success?

The journey of a lawyer, though marked with challenges, can be achieved through resilience, diligence, and a commitment to continuous learning. Future lawyers should focus on attention to detail, strong communication skills, and take a proactive engagement in building their clients’ and firm activities.
